Willcom D4

(More pix at Akihabara News)

Being a Willcom user (Advanced/W-ZERO3[es]), I was surprised to read at Reuters about a new Willcom phone that will come out in June. Reuters reported that the phone will retail for around 128,000 yen, or about $1,270.

Unfortunately, the picture available at Reuters was of the phone's motherboard. Hmmm, I thought. How come I didn't know about this new phone? Usually, news of such a product would show up in the Willcom ezine that shows up in my inbox two or three times a week.

So, I checked my inbox. "I'll be darned!" At 4:00 p.m. I actually did get an email from Willcom regarding the new phone:
世界初!マイクロソフトの最新OS・Windows Vista(R)と、インテルのインテル(R) Centrino(R) Atom(TM) プロセッサー・テクノロジーを搭載した新しい通信端末“WILLCOM D4"を発表!
2008年6月中旬(予定)の発売に向け、スペシャルサイトを本日公開!ぜひご覧ください!
NEWS 新しいモバイルコミュニケーションマシン“”を発表!
The official Willcom D4 site has been done quite well. At the time of this posting, the "Function" link is not active, however. The "movie" link is quite nice. How many of you actually know some young American that has a driver pick him up and take him to work in a Mercedes Benz? I guess if you can afford the Willcom D4, then you might actually be a Tokyo yuppie.

Checking out the specs of the D4, it seems to be the same size as the original W-ZERO3 that came out several years ago. So, although the D4 is cool and surely offers higher performance and capabilities, it's nowhere near as compact as the Advanced [es].

Charlton Heston

Mr. Charlton Heston passed away today. I am sure that many of my students remember him from the movie The Ten Commandments. Some students may even remember him from his Oscar-winning role in Ben Hur.

Most of my younger students probably don't even know who Mr. Heston was nor have had the chance to see his movies. I hope they will take the time to see some of his movies on DVD--at least the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. These were epic movies of the 20th century. These were movies that were made before the special effects of computer digitization. In those days, the greatness of the movies was the result of the greatness of the people who made them--as opposed to the processor speed of modern special effects houses subcontracted by modern Hollywood studios.

Do you have a favorite Heston scene or movie? How many of you remember him from the cult movie, Planet of the Apes?

This is my favorite scene being performed by Charlton Heston.

Do you have favorite actor who has passed away? Is there a Japanese actor who had the same impact on Japanese society as Heston had on American society? Let me know in your next class or leave a comment on this blog.

The Material Girl

Madonna is at it again with another album due to be released at the end of this month. You can pre-order the album from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.jp.

|

For iPod and mp3 player fans, you can also pre-order the album from iTunes.

If you don't have iTunes yet, you can download it for free from Apple here:

What is it that makes me so attracted the this multi-million-dollar business mogul and world-renown entertainer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee? Attitude!

Her attitude shows in her concerts, her photos, her interviews, and best of all, in her music. I own every CD up to 2005, and tens of mp3 dance remixes on my iPod. I'd say about half of my students are big fans of Madonna and their ages range from mid-twenties to late fifties.

There are very few women in this world who have been able to sustain a successful career beyond the first controversial issue or downright mean critic review. The only other women that I can think of who had the attitude and talent to pull it off would be Cher, Tina Turner, and Bette Midler.

If nothing else, these women, especially Madonna, are beautiful and able to adapt themselves to the times.

Can you think of any other great artists who have passed the test of time?
